1962 Chevy Corvair Monza Spyder Convertible
Patrick & Sandy Croan
Engine: The turbocharged 164 ci motor was taken to Engine Machine Service in Los Angeles to have all machine work done like a Magnaflux, nitrated, polished and balanced crankshaft with balanced ARP rods, Federal Mogul forged molly rings, a custom ground camshaft (whose lift & duration are classified), a custom billet cam gear, billet aluminum alternator, cooling fan and belt tensioner. The aluminum heads are Corvair that have been ported, polished and have stainless valves. On top are Otto valve covers. Aspiration comes from a stock manifold topped with a modified 180 model turbocharger and carb. Spark comes from a stock distributor, Crane XR-700 electronic points, MSD ignition, Accel coil and Taylor wires. The 2 1/4" exhaust tubes have been ceramic coated and are hooked to Sebring stainless mufflers.
Trans: Stock '62 4-speed with a quick shift kit.
Chassis: "Stock Corvair frame with no mods. The transverse leaf spring has been updated from a '64 Corvair. The front suspension is from a '66 Corvair with a dual master cylinder and disc brake upgrade. KYB gas shocks were added front & rear.
Body & Interior: The all steel convertible body has been left in original condition. Creature comforts such as an iPOD stereo with a 200W booster kick out music through speakers mounted in the front doors and rear side panels. To top that off, a Bazooka base was installed in the trunk. The stock seats have been covered in tan leather by Classic Auto Upholstery down in Murrieta, CA. The power convertible top is also done in tan.
